The Poetry of Mark Daniel Milbocker
Fossil Awakened

Careful was my scrawl, as careful as my examination
of the shard before me and thee; and
Daring was my haul, as I dared my discrimination
of the hoard and humus.

Stainless instruments, sterilized by forgetfulness,
pull apart and dissect once-molten minutia; and
Steal clay solidity, from cranny and crevice,
carve into relief ancient intentions,
into a masterpiece of revelation.

When painted eyes pierced my perception
Shivers washed over me, as I began to apprehend,
Feature and edge cast shadows upon my retinal walls
Like an ancient rune - a key turned.

Into my corpus reptilia,
heavy awakening of arcane nucleics,
elder expressions cascade through my genes,
sacred instincts evoked, from when we imagined gods.

In the modern angst-soaked mind,
spent on so many shimmers and scintillations,
a lifetime spent on scholarly pursuit,
five decades toiled patiently but ardently,
with equal skill equal craft, and passion
spent gazing into the stars for secrets,
nature's pattern and spectral transmission,
found in this moment, precious moment,
when our eyes first met and I remembered.
