The Poetry of Mark Daniel Milbocker
Koidal

Inky the depths
free from crepuscular shine
just below the gypsum creases
of the sapphire surface
shadows fall from clouds of leaves
turned yellow from the pale
of indian summer doldrums
and the waning of daylight warmth
amid the tireless gumming for
insects that stud the mossy stone
while trailing in serpentine strokes
lazily around an oval ocean
long past are the gregarious days
aflutter with tail chasing and
the rut of defending swollen bellies
these days all wanes to a hover
as polaris casts its star
like some fallen spar spell upon
the dappling of the darkness
and the pristine waters of
koi eyes salts the turn
of the milky way.
